Copper was worked in what is now the U.S. northeast centered on the Lake Superior region.
The earliest known copper work in the area lasted from about 8,500 years ago to about 6,500 years ago. Pure native copper was found in large quantities and used to make mostly utilitarian tools and weapons and a bit as a trade item. At a much later date the copper was used by native American to make art and luxury items and used in trade, some trade of very long distances,
