The Word is "boycott"

Word Power Has a History

Irish Origen:

The Irish Land Wars are the source of the introduction of a powerfully useful word into the English language.

In 1850 Irish persons formed the Tenant Right League in Ireland to demand reform to the land law of Ireland. It was a law not of democratic origin. This organization and demand was followed by about 40 years of unrest in Ireland as well as to some learning and reform.

The word in question is the surname of a landlord so disliked by his tenants that he was refused labor to harvest his crops, as well as refusal to service shops, laundries, and other facilities. The social excommunication of Mr. Boycott led to his name being used to describe it. Boycotts have worked well as nonviolent protest measures.

Check out the the Home Rule League of Ireland online. Doing so could contribute to your political education. Then go on to check the Irish Land League. Doing so could add to your understanding of political organization. Check out Gandhi  on the use of resistance and organization to achieve social ends. Well reasoned and presented protests have been a useful social power. The Irish National League may be interesting to check out, but may prove complicated by the source of your information.

As an educator:

Due to my background as an educator I feel the need to add, is that one thing you need to learn is that you are responsible for ruling yourself. In Ireland that has been called Home Rule. It does seem best to begin at home. You can blame your father, wife, mayor, or President, but that, I have found a waste of energy. Where you are concerned you are the authority and the boss, and the doing is yours to do. You will have your results.

We have a lot to learn about politics and our own history. History is how we learn what works and and what doesn't. It's mostly the experience of others, but we each have our own history. Politics can be called how we cooperate to get doings done.

Understanding and meaning:

A instructive synonym for boycott is ostracize.

An example of boycotting is the American boycott of  English goods during the American Revolution such as the Boston Tea Party. This was mostly the refusal to accept English goods, especially to buy them.

So, to boycott, can refer to social or political action to initiate change.

Boycotting may well thought of as organized and strategic as a campaign to protest by ostracization so as to initiate or maintain change.

First Notes On Organization

We know that organization increases our power enormously. We know that our organization informs and educates us well.

We are capable of forgetting the pleasures and satisfactions  of organization. I expect that the pleasures and satisfactions I am recalling just now will not be the same as yours. Still among mine you may find one or two of yours.

I have an interest in ad hoc organizations and and those of longer term.
Below are many of my personal likes in organizations. You may find some of your likes listed.

An organization which attracts me often has:
~ members who feel connected, involve, and respected.
~ the motive of helping me and others to thrive.
~ a clear understanding of costs and benefits.
~ members who promote widespread participation and responsibility.
~ members who embrace reality and who are willing to approach the truth.
~ members who value honesty and justice.
~ a mission I find valuable and pleasing.
~ plenty of talk in which all participate.

An organization which pleases me is one which:
~ Keeps me in the information loop.
~ most members feel well connected with leadership.
~ Makes very clear who pays how much and who gets what.
~ moves in the direction of democracy.
~ tends to be inclusive.
~ tends to safeguard that which I value.
~ includes those who study and promote actions good for me and others.
~ advocates and protects people and process important to me.
~ promotes dialogue which leads to appropriate action.

I find an organization congenial when it includes:
~ teaching the process of organizing.
~ the purpose of advocating and protecting me.
~ objectives very like my own.
~ intelligent, respectful, loving ladies.

I am very interested in hearing of your likes in organizations. I expect to post more about organization and organizing. Dialogue skills are organizational skills for all participants in society

More as soon as I can.

Your Vocabulary and the Irish Land Wars

 Irish history and Your Governance

The Irish Land Wars are the source or the introduction of a powerfully effective word in the English language. In 1850 Irish persons formed the the Tenant Rights League in Ireland to demand reform in the land law of Ireland. A law not of democratic origin. This organization was followed by about 40 years of unrest in Ireland, and to some learning and reform.

The word in question was derived from the name of a landlord so disliked that he was refused labor to harvest his crops, as well as refusal to to service shops, laundries, and other facilities. This social excommunication of Mr. Boycott, this landlord, led to his name being used to describe these refusals. Boycotts have worked well as a nonviolent protest measure.

Know you know the meaning of "to boycott," "boycotting," and more. The Word is "boycott"

We can be more aware that we are responsible for ruling ourselves. We can be more aware of out responsibility for self-governance. In Ireland a name for self rule has been Home Rule. It does seem best to begin governance at home. One's town, county, water district, and country are examples of places for home Rule. You can blame your wife, your father, your mayor, and your president, but that often turns out to be a waste of energy. Where you are concerned you are the authority and the boss, and the doing is yours to do. You will have your results. We all have responsibility and we all have learning to do. That learning is easier when we do it together.

We can learn more effective doing by observing the doings of others. that's history. You can check out the Home Rule League of Ireland for some instructive history. You may find out things just by reading on here. You may learn something of practical civics or social organization. You can also report your understandings in "comments" below. "Comments" can also be a good place to ask questions. You can check out Gandhi on social organizing and the use of resistance. Well reasoned and well presented have been important parts of useful social measures. U. S. citizens have plenty to learn about the use of our Constitution and the use of democracy. There is much of interest to learn of the structure and function of our actual governments.

We can become more effectual citizens by learning about the uses pf politics and of our history. History is were we can begin to learn of what has worked and what has not. As we learn to observe and to practice taking care of ourselves (self-governance), we may find it useful to learn more of and from our own histories as well as from the histories of others.

We can call politics the way we co-operate to get our governance working well.

Well, what do you know about the verb "to boycott?" You may remember that every verb is an action word. You can learn more about the: when, where, why, and how of boycott online. You may report your interesting and useful findings here in the "comments" section just below.

Thank you very much for reading.

Peasants' Revolt of 1381 AD

   Some doings and

happenings can be taxing and humiliating. Humiliation of certain people can be dangerous. Successful conscious social change takes careful organization and planning.
